Six Decades In

Old guys can still do fun things.

American lieutenant, politician and 41st President of the United States, George H. W. Bush, was born on this day in 1924.

He probably said that after one of his post-ninety-years-old skydiving jumps.

I realize that I’ve started talking a good bit about retirement.

It’s just that, I turn sixty in a couple of weeks and I’ve realized that it’s time I start acting my age.

I’ll buy that one if you will.

Then again, if you’re a casting director needing a gentleman of a certain age, I’m happy to act that part.

I’m just sayin’.

Seriously, here I am, not quite as advanced as the Senior Mr. Bush, in fact, not by a long shot. But, also realizing that, while I am many things, young is not one of them.

I refuse to surrender and say that the best days are behind me. Pretty sure it’s safe to say the most days are behind me, but nothing has to make them the best.

But don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to try jumping out of a perfectly good plane.

And, no, I would not have done that forty years ago either.

Granted, one of the benefits of reaching this age is that the filters are mostly gone. Well, not entirely. Just don’t cross me.

I have sarcasm and I’m not afraid to use it.

Look, I’m not about to shuffle off to the senior buffet. At the same time I’m not about to turn down a discount either.

And, I really could use a sensible pair of shoes.

Just not white ones.

Here’s my reality. At almost-sixty, I’m not as financially secure as I want to be. But I’m better off than a lot of people. I know that, and I am grateful.

I’m not as healthy as I want to be, but I’m in better shape than I have been in the past, extra poundage included, and I’m working on making that even better.

I’m not a best-selling author (yet), but I’m writing.

I’m not a Tony-winning actor (yet), but I’m acting.

I’m not an Oscar-winning director (yet), but I’m directing.

I haven’t had my (first) gallery show, but I’m creating art…okay, not currently as much as I want to be, but work with me.

Sure, I wear the chains I forged in life (see: day job). But, I’m still pretty fortunate.

The wife and I are both well-employed.

The boys are pursuing their dreams.

And every night, two oversized dogs go bat-$#!* crazy every time I walk in the door, even if no one else does.

In other words, in spite of the trials, and the bills, and the aches and pains…not to be confused with the pains-in-the ass…life is pretty good, and I’m pretty blessed.

Some days, blessed rhymes with stressed, but we all know there’s nothing on my to-do list that I didn’t put there…well, mostly.

Am I old enough and wise enough to wish that I had done some things differently and made some different choices?

Of course.

Am I stupid enough to wish that I could go back and do things all over again?

Oh holy hell no.

Sorry, did I type that outloud?

I don’t know what the future will hold. I’m not guaranteed the time to finish writing this post.

But, whatever time is left, now that I’m a senior citizen, I’m giving myself time to enjoy it.

Day by day.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6:34
