Welcome Friday

farewellsummer

Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.

American singer, actress, and vaudevillian, Judy Garland was born on this day in 1922 (died 1969)

Welcome to Friday. It certainly took us long enough to get there.

Does life today allow us to be ourselves?

I’m at the day job today whilst wearing what is acceptable casual Friday attire. Now, granted, I choose how to wear it, but the standards were developed by society. My own self would be more comfortable in a t-shirt, shorts, and flip flops…at the beach.

I’ll also be wearing that standard uniform tomorrow as I am being forced against my will to work the day job on Saturday. I’ve not yet won that argument.

Yet.

Sure there are ways we can be creative and show our personality.

On the days I have to wear a tie, I choose a bow tie. But the choice that a tie is needed was made for me.

I suppose in a way this conflicts with yesterday’s post that there’s always choice. Then again not.

Bow tie over necktie is a choice. And it’s the fashionable, you could say first-rate, choice for me.

I try not to live life with regrets, but I spent too many years trying to be what others expected me to be.

That’s why the writing, the acting, and the art often remained on the shelf. Maybe the twenty-year-old version of me choosing those would have been the first-rate version of me.

I can’t go back and change that. In that case, there’s not a choice. The choice is that I have to choose to accept that.

But there is a choice to move forward differently.

My choices these days are how to fit that all in with my other obligations.

My other obligations this weekend are many. I’m going to a theatre preview this evening, a work meeting tomorrow, and I’m working the weekend job.

Somewhere in there I’ll choose to work on the blog posts for next week and finish up my final writing assignment for my class.

And I’ll choose to do yard work, and house repairs, and all the other fun stuff.

The challenge is to not let all of that bog me down and work to be the best that I can be.

Let’s get to the weekend.

Make it first-rate.
