I will admit that I almost laughed out loud at the Saruman/Yoda fight in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
I mean I have the greatest respect for Christopher Lee who worked long after many would have retired. But c’mon, that fight was unintentionally funny…and since I saw it after The Fellowship of the Ring…well…
I’m hoping to be intentionally funny tomorrow at an audition.
Calm down. No I am not going to be on stage between now and September. I told you that. But if you’re in the Richmond Theatre Community you know there’s a big round of auditions tomorrow for the upcoming season. Nothing that I could remotely be considered for would begin rehearsals before the end of August.
Like Sir Christopher, I may not get the part that I want. Truth is I may not get any part. But, if I do, I hope I can accept it with grace and give it my best.
Most of the local theater companies have announced their seasons. There are lots of opportunities. But there’s also a lot of competition.
Here’s my reality. Since I branched out and started pursuing this acting thing about four years ago, I’ve gone to a lot of auditions. In fact it was probably more than four years ago, it’s just that it was in 2012 that I was cast to play Potiphar in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Dogwood Dell.
Since then, the work has been pretty steady. In fact, long time readers will recall that last year I had more work than I could wrap my fanny around.
So, even though I’ll have the panic attacks of thinking “what if I’m never cast again?” something will likely come along. I see lots of things on the new schedules that I’d like to do. And, I’m going for them.
I may not get cast in anything.
My challenge is to accept that gracefully.
It may not be my season. But somewhere, sometime, someone along the line will need to cast a large, old, white man.
I’m ready for my closeup.
