In Remembrance

The Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

1 Corinthians 11:23-29

We’ve come to that most holy of weeks. Since the triumphal entry on Sunday, Jesus has been making his way to the cross.

His followers do not yet understand. And when the unthinkable happens, they will understand even less.

Though it will likely feel like an eternity, Sunday is but a few days away. And there is hope.

Believers around the world observe the ritual of the last supper, taking the body and bread, and becoming one with Christ. Remembering his sacrifice. Remembering that we are unworthy of his love.

And yet, he gives.

We had wandered, we all had wandered
Far from the fold of “the Shepherd of the sheep”;
But He sought us where we were,
On the mountains bleak and bare,
And bro’t us home, and bro’t us home,
And bro’t us safely home to God.

Thomas Chisholm, 1920

Although I can but imagine what those three days of despair were like, I know that we are living through dark times of our own. The difference is that we know of both the sacrifice and the triumph.

That includes the triumph to come, because we’ve read the back of the book.

Take some time this weekend for reflection.

He loves you. He cares for you. He is there for you.

Remember that.
