That Virginia Bourbon

On this day in 1789, Reverend Elijah Craig was the first to distill whiskey from maize. It was named Bourbon since Craig lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky.

Or, what is now known as Bourbon County, Kentucky.

See, Kentucky didn’t become a state until 1792, which makes bourbon, uniquely Virginian.

Don’t get me wrong, I have a soft spot for Kentucky. I went to college there. I met my bride there. My son is in school there now.

I am also aware that 95% of all bourbon is produced in Kentucky.

But, if you enjoy your bourbon, thank a Virginian.
