RECAFFEINATED MONDAYS: A Week of Feels

Observant readers will note that I didn’t write here last week. Those less observant may or may not have read a week of old posts.

The reasons for not writing vary. And they wouldn’t make a very interesting post.

Let’s just say it was a week with all the feels.

All. The. Feels.

The week started with Father’s Day which is always an emotionally difficult day for me. And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

Then we moved into high gear final plans for my Mother’s 90th birthday celebration. My siblings and I had been planning for a while and we had the usual last-minute scrambling to make sure that we had everything under control.

The event was a grand success. There were nearly 25 people there which is the largest crowd many of us have been with since we were placed under house arrest.

There was no spray paint involved.

The wife and I returned home on Friday in time to participate in the events of my 40th College Reunion from Asbury University.

Obviously, we couldn’t gather in person this year in the Holy City (if you know, you know), but we gathered online for a virtual hymn sing on Friday night, a worship service and University update on Saturday morning.

Then Saturday afternoon we had an online Zoom gathering with members of our class.

For a roomful of 60-somethings, we had fewer issues with Zoom than many of the meetings I’ve attended

during this time.

It was not the way we would have liked to gather. Being back on campus is always a special time. But, under the circumstances, the event was practically perfect in almost every way. We even had some people “attend” who have not been able to join us in person over the years.

Typical for our class, we ran over the allotted time. We always do.

Sunday morning, I woke to the news that a classmate from high school had passed. I don’t know the details other than knowing he’d had some health challenges over the years, Rest in Peace, Barry.

To complete Sunday morning we watched the online service from the church we’ve been attending since the first of the year. I say “attending” because we only got about a month and a half before we were locked away. The pastor of twenty-some years is leaving to become a District Superintendent. We haven’t been there long enough to really become a part of the congregation and to be emotionally attached, but it still felt like we weren’t quite ready for this.

So, there you have it. A week of all the feels.

It was sort of like a roller coaster ride.

Except I don’t do roller coasters and the park can’t open yet under current guidelines.

This will be another week of many feels.

We’re at the mid-point of the year. The end of the fiscal year and all that fun stuff.

My gym reopened today. I avoided the morning rush and plan to go late this afternoon.

No, really.

On Wednesday, I assume the role of Managing Director for Chamberlayne Actors Theatre.

No, this is not a replacement job. It’s another job.

We’re also coming up on Independence Day. I can’t help but think that’s going to look a lot different this year.

I’m still waving the flag. Even with all of our problems, this is still the greatest, and freest country on the planet.

Finally, there’s another birthday coming at the end of the week. This time, we’ll make it my own.

If you need to know the number, you know. Let’s just say that the government now says that I’m eligible to participate in a certain Ponzi scheme.

You do the math. I haven’t taken a math class since Richard Nixon was in the White House. And his poll numbers were still good.

So, we’re in for another wild ride.

Buckle up and keep your hands and feet inside the car at all times.
