I Ain’t Lion

A lion does not ask permission before he eats a zebra.
Lions cannot talk and zebras will not listen.

American actor and director Keven Spacey was born on this day in 1959

I’ve been a fan of lions for a long time. I think it mostly started with the reading of the Chronicles of Narnia where the lion Aslan represents the Christ-life figure, giving himself for the redemption of others.

‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good.

I have a rather small, but important collection of lions. And one day I’ll return, yes I will to the Grand Canyon to purchase that onyx lion that I thought a bit excessive when I was actually in Arizona as a missionary. I’m sure they still have it in stock some 38 years later.

I did splurge on a Successories poster of a lion with this quote:

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed…every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle…when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.

We all know that I don’t run.

But the point I think here, at least the one I intend to make, is that sometimes what is required is action, not talking, not negotiation.

Read into that any political context you want. I’m not going down that road.

While I haven’t made this particular purchase from Despair.com, I’m inclined to agree with their sentiment that says:

Meetings: Because none of us is as dumb as all of us.

I want that in my day job office because 75% of what I do involves meetings.

I realize that the lions generally win, but I’m with the zebras on this one. I don’t want to listen.

Which probably says more about my day job than I actually should.

That’s okay. There’s a plan. But I’m not talking about it. Too much, anyway.

Well, except to get back to that hitting the ground running part.

Like I said, I’m not a runner.

Still, I don’t stop. I can’t stop.

I can’t stop working toward the goals, not matter how far in the distance they may be.

That allusive retirement goal has been moved down the field more than a couple of times. But it’s still there.

Maybe when the book is done it will get Oprah’s attention and I can hit that retirement line sooner. Maybe not.

Maybe Publisher’s Clearing House will call and I won’t need to worry about book sales. Maybe not.

What I know is that I can’t sit around waiting for those to happen because without my input, they’re not going to.

I’m getting a bit rambly here, but this is what I’m talking about.

There are goals out there. It might be a zebra luncheon. It might be retirement.

They may or may not happen today. Or next week.

What we have to do instead is take each day as it comes and get from sunrise to sunset (Casting directors, I could so rock that part).

Whether you’re the lion or the zebra, take each day as it comes and keep moving forward.
