Believe

“The secret to doing anything is believing that you can do it. Anything that you believe you can do strong enough, you can do. Anything. As long as you believe.”

American artist and television host, Bob Ross, was born on this day in 1942 (died 1995)

I sometimes wonder why we ever tell a child “you can’t do that.”

I mean, beyond the obvious “you’ll put your eye out” or “no you can’t finger paint on the wall with the contents of your diaper” kind of comments.

What is it that makes us think we have to tell a child, or a teenager, or even an adult that they can’t pursue their dreams?

Sure, there are considerations like bills, and rent, and student loans…of course maybe the student loans weren’t necessary.

That’s another post.

I think I’m considering this a lot because I’m a 57-year-old who is just getting around to pursuing his writing and acting dreams.

While my day job isn’t my happy place, it’s allowing me to do this.

These are the chains I forged in life.

I suppose since it’s “Throwback Thursday” I could throw myself back to my college graduation and make some different choices.

But the truth is, while I wouldn’t mind looking like I did back then, I have no desire to live the last 35 years over.

It’s been a wild ride.

And much of it, no most of it, has been very good.

I’ve done some really cool things. I’ve been some really cool places. I have a really cool family.

Even if I occasionally lose my cool.

I digress.

So, I’ll take the advice of Bob Ross and paint a happy little tree.

Then I’ll sit on under it to edit my book or learn my lines.
