Advent Day 20 – No Room

How long had they been traveling from Nazareth?

Couldn’t Joseph have done a better job of planning? Of figuring out where they were going to stay?

In the days of the Internet and smart phones we can’t quite imagine traveling somewhere without at least some idea of where we’re going to stay.

Maybe Joseph assumed there would be room. Maybe Mary’s pregnancy caused their trip to take longer than expected which gave the city time to fill up.

Or maybe the significance is the simple, humble birth of the Savior.

Maybe the significance is that each of us need to make room for Him in our hearts.

Advent Day 19 – God With Us

Throughout the gospels and the New Testament, the prophecies concering the coming of the Messiah are fulfilled.

On what we think of as that cold, silent night, Mary fulfilled that prophecy and called her baby boy, Jesus.

We have a traditional sentimental view of what happened that night. We’re most likely wrong about the date. We don’t talk about the messy process of birth that could only be amplified by not being in the sterile environments of today’s hospitals.

But with that reality, a stable, blood, sweat, screams, and a baby that most surely cried and need a diaper change, the prophecy was fulfilled.

God was indeed with us.

And one of us.
