If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Five Weeks

I entered therapy five weeks ago today. Just a few days after the second surgery.

Wait, you’re thinking, didn’t he say he wasn’t going to write about this experience every day.

I think what I actually said was that I don’t want to write about it every day.

This, however, is something of a milestone. Or it would be if I could actually advance toward milestones.

Baby. Steps.

That’s what I’m taking a few of every day in therapy.

The nerves are mending. I’m getting stronger.

But really…five weeks?

Will it be five weeks more?

And then?

That’s the hardest part about this whole process. There’s no set end date.

This morning I actually calculated the date the insurance runs out. No way I’ll be here that long.

Please Lord?

If I had a broken bone, the doctor could project when the cast would come off.

If I had a cold or the flu, well, they’re expected to run their course and then you get better.

No one can tell me when I will walk again.

No one can tell me how much longer I will have to use a wheelchair.

They can guess. But that’s about it.

So, then we struggle with the need to build a ramp at the house as well as the need for a chairlift to get me upstairs.

We’ll probably move ahead with those, just in case.

But in five more weeks will I need them?

Nobody knows.

That’s frustrating. And, if truth be told, a little depressing.

I’ll get through this.

Even if it’s five weeks at a time.
