When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
Mark 5: 27-28
“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. John 5: 7-9
After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
John 9: 6-7
Healings. Miraculous. Instant.
These and other stories tell much of the story of Christ’s ministry while here on earth. And yet there were those who didn’t believe, even after seeing the miracles.
I believe. Lord, help my unbelief.
I still believe in healing. I’ve known people to be healed. I’ve seen people healed.
Why then, has my healing not happened?
During the weeks when I was fighting the infection in my back I would wonder about the pain. I thought surely that when the infection was over, I would be recovered and somewhat back to normal.
With hundreds, and I do not exaggerate, of people praying for me, why didn’t my healing happen?
Why wasn’t I getting better?
Beyond that, when the infection was gone, why did worse things happen with my back?
Why did I wake up from surgery, delighted that the pain was gone, but to the complete surprise that I was no longer able to stand or walk?
These are questions I cannot answer because I do not know the mind of God.
I do believe I am in the process of being healed.
I do believe I will walk again.
It’s not going to happen in my time frame.
That’s the hard lesson here.
Sure I could have been healed instantly. But somewhere, in his purposes, that was not what he planned for me.
I will admit to at times being angry, depressed, and completely demoralized over how long this is all going to take.
That said. I have no idea how long this will take.
Ecclesiates 3:11 says:
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
One day, maybe not even on this side of Eternity, I’ll look back and realized why this happened the way it did.
For now, I get through it one day at a time.
And that, my friends, is the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
When I started thinking about this post/theme/article, whatever you want to call it, I thought that surely my conclusion or theory, again, whatever you want to call it, would be more profound.
