If you only write when inspired, you may be a fairly decent poet, but you’ll never be a novelist.
Neil Gaiman
True story: In high school I thought I was a poet.
I was not.
It’s also true. I have unfinished novels that sit on a shelf or in an external hard drive waiting for inspiration.
But I was also inspired to start a new one last night. One that might actually get finished.
The lack of inspiration also applies to blogging.
Regular readers (both of you) may have noted that I did not post yesterday. I tried. But by about 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, it just wasn’t happening.
It’s a challenge because, as you may or may not have noticed, I’m expanding the information on this blog with a few sidebars, some extra notes and items that may or may not be of interest.
Time. Consuming.
At least once a day I ask myself it it’s worth it. I think it is. If for no other reason than to keep me in the
It’s also helped that I’ve mostly stopped the television binging. Earlier in the spring I binged This is Us which I highly recommend. Then I re-watched Suits which started out great but I had to force myself to finish it out of stubbornness and because I’d never seen the last season,
This summer’s writing is helped by the fact that Dr. Who is finished for the season, and there’s only one more episode of The Chosen which was delayed until Sunday because of some debate or something.
No, I’m not watching that either. I’m going to the theater.
I’ve given the second season of House of the Dragon two episodes. I’m not sure they’ll get three.
And no, I’m not going back to The Rings of Power.
Lest you think I’m avoiding the writing because I’m binging television and movies, those shows are generally on in the background while I work on another project.
Maybe it’s the age of the Internet and social media, but I can’t simply sit still and watch something. I have to multi-task.
Which I why I’m behind on several of the Best Picture winners. Subtitles don’t allow me to multi-task.
I’m not sure where I’m going with this. Maybe nowhere.
At the same time, movies and television are often where I draw my inspiration.
You know, like “I can write better crap.”
Let’s go get inspired.
