It’s Not An Every Day Thing

You cannot have peaceful means – peaceful means will have to be used to bring about peaceful ends. If you use destructive means, you’re going to bring about destructive ends.

African-American activist and author, Coretta Scott King, was born on this day in 1927 (died 2006).

True story: I once stood on the National Mall and held hands with Mrs. King and a few thousand of our closest friends for Hands Across America in 1986.

Observant readers know that I did not post yesterday.

Long-time observant readers will say “oh no, is he whining about his posting schedule again?”

The Write Side Shop

Perhaps.

I’ve gone back and forth over my need to have a blog presence on the interwebz. As a writer, I think that I do. The artsy-fartsy stuff can do just fine on Instagram and Pinterest.

Although my wife has expressed a desire for me to be less fartsy.

I digress.

Each day I get a little closer to finding that sweet spot of balance between the day job which I must do, and the creative side, which I also must do.

I’m closer.

Yes, I’m juggling the drawing, and the childrens’ books, and the Santa, and the serious writing…and you know the list goes on.

I would like to write brilliantly in this space every day. But it’s not just sitting down at the keyboard and typing out 500-1000 words. I do that every morning, but that’s not for public consumption.

I want to be like some of my favorite writers who publish every day. Or at least on a consistent basis.

But, writing is their full time job, they’ve been working at it for years. In most cases they’re not distracted by every shining new project squirrel that runs across the page.

Committing to a significant post here very weekday is time consuming.

Wednesday night I tried to write the Thursday post. It didn’t happen, so I set my alarm for 5:00 and vowed to get up and write it before I left for my Board meeting.

I didn’t come up with an idea for Thursday. I came up with the idea for this post.

When I got home from said Board meeting last night, I read this quote from Brett McKay at The Art of Manliness.

We only have so much time and resources to direct toward life projects. If we spend that limited time and resources on goals we can’t achieve, we’re setting ourselves up for massive frustration. We’d be better off redirecting our limited time and resources to a new achievable goal.

Spending time trying to write here every day has taken away from other projects.

There’s an “in this economy” meme in here somewhere but this isn’t just about money.

It’s about priorities. It’s about the flexibility to change things up.

The blog simply can’t be the number one priority.

I’m not going away. I’ll be here at least once week. And, who knows? Maybe in a few weeks I’ll change my mind again and be here every day.

For now, I don’t know about you, but it’s the weekend and I’ve got projects.
