Mary and Joseph had traveled there for the census, to what Luke referred to as the City of David. While they were there, Jesus was born.

I visited there almost forty years ago and was initially struck with the commercial nature of the town. But why not? Thousands of Christian pilgrims travel to Bethlehem each year.
But long ago, on what we like to think of as that silent night, a baby was born.
He would redeem us all.
