It’s nice of Sportsbackers to keep sending me reminders about signing up for the Ukrops/Monument Avenue 10K.
I remember when we still had Urkops…and monuments.
Too soon?
I’ve walked in the 10K several times. I think we all know that I don’t run. Last year and this year, the structure of the run has been different due to COVID. And the traditional venue of the run is different because of vandalism.
But that’s all I’m going to say about that.
We’re thirteen months into this pandemic thing, but who the hell is counting anymore?
I mean, excuse the swearage, but it’s just not funny.
Yesterday my Facebook memories showed me this snark from a year ago:
Anybody else have that Sunday night feeling of dreading going to the home office tomorrow?
It’s not funny anymore.
It probably wasn’t all that funny a year ago.
I mean, I’m not complaining, but I guess I am. I’m just tired of this.
But my reality is that I may never go back to the office full time. I think that will be true for a lot of us as companies and organizations realize that we can be just as effective, perhaps more working from home.
Face it, we’ve all gotten better at doing this online stuff, including virtual meetings. Well, except for a few feline lawyers.
And the message there is don’t mess around with the settings.
As more and more people are vaccinated things are opening up.
Slowly. Very slowly.
But while the shutdown was pretty much overnight when the pandemic was declared, you know when we were told we needed 15 days to slow the spread, the reopening isn’t going to be immediate.
It will be slow.
First we have to be told we can open up.
Then we have to follow the guidelines.
Then we have to wait and see if people are willing to listen to the Good Witch of the North and come out, come out, wherever you are.
I’m ready to get out there. But then again, while I was always being cautious and following the protocols, I’ve never been scared of this.
I know people who remain terrified.
I’ve used this quote before:
“It always comes down to two choices; Get busy living, or get busy dying.”
Stephen King in Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption
We’ve lost a year. We need to get busy living.
Yes, we can be cautious. Yes, we can adapt.
But no, we can’t sit in our jammies behind a computer screen any longer.
The weather is turning warm.
Go outside for a walk, or a run, or a bike ride, or a drive.
Just get out of the house.
Restaurants are opening.
Go eat. If you’re seated you can’t get the virus.
That’s not my logic but it’s the way it works.
Go to church. Go to a sporting event. Go to the theater.
Sure, these’ opportunities are rare, but if you see them, go do it.
People need us to be active.
The theatre where I’m Managing Director (one of many, many hats I wear), is trying to figure out our next season. We have to figure out what we’ll do that will make people come out of their hidey holes and buy a ticket.
It’s not going to be easy.
Open your front door.
Take a walk.
Buy the ticket.
Order dessert.
See the show.
Cheer for the team.
Just make sure you put your pants on first.

MUSICAL INTERLUDE
The 93 Annual Academy Awards Ceremony was held on Sunday night. I didn’t watch. Not in protest of Hollywood wokeness, but because I’d only seen two movies that had received any nominations. It just means that I have more to add to that point on my bucket list.
By tradition, the Academy recognizes the artists we’ve lost since the last ceremony. ICYMI, here is that segment.
