Mr. DeMille, I’m Ready for My Closeup Hug

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready. Ready for this mess to be over.

Actually, I do know about you. You’re also ready for this to be over. It’s probably that we’re just at different frustration levels.

My Facebook memories this morning showed a picture of me in my first attempt at a mask…a bandana folded with hair ties to hold it on the ears.

Don’t ask why I have a ready supply of hair ties.

That was when I thought that was a clever solution to the mask problem. One that I was certain would be temporary.

NARRATOR: It was not temporary.

Now I have a collection hanging on the wall over my desk. I rotate them out on a regular basis.

I can also look there and know that I’ve lost at least two. They will likely show up in a jacket pocket at some to be determined future date.

Every day the news continues to frustrate us. The vaccines are working…the numbers are surging…we may have to wear masks until Jesus comes back.

Fortunately, He knows the depths of my heart and will be able to identify me behind a mask.

But unless He’s coming back real soon, and I mean real, soon, I hope I won’t be covering my face.

Read into that the theology that you will.

I have to tell you though that I’m more than through with living in fear.

We’ve destroyed our economy, we’ve destroyed our children’s education, we’ve heard of thousands of loved ones who have died alone because protocols wouldn’t allow family to be nearby.

And that’s not just in New York state.

So, I’m frustrated because I can’t fix this.

I am more frustrated because I believe there are those who want to keep us locked down, who want to control us.

Read into that the conspiracy theories that you will.

Don’t get me wrong on any of this. I know the virus is serious.

Do the right things. Wear the mask. Wash your hands. Social distance. Get the vaccine.

But don’t live in fear.

I get my second Pfizer shot tomorrow. I didn’t want it. Those of you who know me best know my aversion to pharmaceuticals. If you don’t know the story, it will be in the book. Maybe.

By the way, I will make this one political statement. If you’re not thanking the Trump Administration for the vaccine, you’re not being honest. Last May he was laughed at for saying we’d have a vaccine by the end of the year. None of this was developed after January 20.

I digress.

So, I’m doing what I can, and I hope that you are too.

I’m ready to get back out there.

I have a theater acquaintance who likes to say that when this is over he’s going to hug people until it gets weird.

Let’s hope that’s soon.

BENEDICTION

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
