And the 31 mornings and evenings were the first month.
That’s a slight paraphrase.
When last we met, I wrote about how I’ve recognized the need to slow down and how it’s not a crisis if I don’t get to everything on my list.
The neighbors may think it’s a crisis if I don’t get to the yard work. If they’re reading this, well…they know what to do.
Funny though, I’ve realized that I’m the one who needs to read my own blog.
By about mid-morning last Monday I was feeling pretty good. So, I started making a mental list.
I need to do this. I need to do that. I need to do this…
I was like Steve Martin in The Jerk, except with my to do list instead of stuff…I need this and that’s all, except this, and I need this.
Then I remembered the lessons of 2020, or one of them. Not everything has to be urgent. Not everything has to be done.
And, that’s okay.
I remembered that lesson as I was working on a post about all of the things I need, or want, to get done. I realized…”hey, I don’t have to write this post.”
So, I didn’t.
I’m sure there are writing and marketing gurus out there that would tell me not blogging on a regular basis is a mistake.
In fact, they would confirm that for the “reduced” price of $495, valid for today only.
For what it’s worth, if your sales pitch to me says “take an additional thousand dollars off” you will never have me at hello.
In fact I’m dangerously close to eliminating you from my inbox.
We’re one month in to 2021 and we’re realizing what we knew all along.
As much as we hoped, the flip of the calendar on December 31 didn’t magically make things better.
NARRATOR: Nothing is going to magically make things better.
Things will only get better as we get better. Things will only get better as we go back to focusing on relationships and not tweets.
As much as I love social media, and use it far too much, we might have been better off living through a pandemic without it.
We’re all looking forward to the day when we can get back out. Hopefully the vaccine will help to get us there.
But what was presented to us as “fifteen days to slow the spread” is going to turn into more than a year of anxiety, of separation, of Netflix…
None of us expected to be at this place on February 1, 2021. And yet, here we are.
We can whine about it, or we can change out of our pajamas and get on with the day.
NARRATOR: Now he’s talkin’ crazy.
We’ve had this discussion. Most of this is out of our control.
None of this will be fixed with a tweet or a meme.
All we can do is decide what we’re going to do in our own little world.
We’ve got a fresh new month to work with.
Wipe your feet before you go in.
