This past weekend the bride and I hosted two social events in our home.
One a cast party for the cast and crew of A Doublewide, Texas Christmas the last show that I directed. You’re sorry that you missed it. My work at the amusement park meant that, not only did I not see most of the performances, but I couldn’t gather for the traditional post-strike party. So we picked the first available weekend night and had folks over.
The other, just a long-overdue gathering of friends.
Good times were had by all.
While we love to entertain, our schedules don’t always allow for it. But this time, since the house was decorated for Christmas (don’t judge, the season just ended on Sunday), and since we’ve been blessed with my Mother’s large dining table that easily accommodates ten and could probably take a couple more, we thought it was time.
Saturday morning, after assessing the need of how many leaves to put in the table, we talked about the need to do this more.
We come by it naturally. My wife grew up in a home where her Mother was always blessing folks with a loaf of homemade bread, or cookies, or something else she had grown or baked. And she also taught the lesson that, when you’re going to a potluck, you pretty much take a whole meal.
I spent eight years in Washington as a meetings and event planner. For a while I considered that my calling until politics brought that to an abrupt end. Don’t get me wrong, politics also brought me to Richmond.
For a while I thought I would be creating my own event company. And, while that dream is not entirely gone, it’s morphed into more of a production company. That’s the link in the sidebar for Historic Occasions. The blog is somewhat dormant, but there’s a plan. More about that in the future.
Having folks over allows me to explore my artistic nature. I don’t always get that when I’m planning a Board meeting at my government day job. Who am I kidding? I never get that at the day job.
But, there’s something about looking to see what we have around the house and transforming that into a tablescape.
Which then, of course, is available for posting on Instagram.
The Saturday morning conversation came around to the fact that “we’re good at this,” and that “we should do this more often.”
Sometimes life gets in the way. We’re both cast in shows that play this spring, so finding the time, and all of that stuff.
In addition, it’s easier entertain in the winter months. Soft lighting and candles cover a multitude of housecleaning sins.
I digress.
In additions to our plans to entertain more, I’m already in discussions regarding some possible events. Because, well, you know I need more projects.
I’m not sure where all of this is going. Frankly, I didn’t get as much planning done on New Year’s Day as I had, well, planned.
But stay tuned.
We have a big table, and we’re not afraid to use it.
Plus, the title of this post gives me a reason to post Natalie.
