Please Mom, just 500 more words…

I don’t have time to write.

Let me rephrase that.

I don’t have time to write so I make time to write.

And that’s what it’s all about.

Honest confession here. When I made the decision last week to resume the blog, I wrote down the brilliant title you see above. When I went to write this post, I had no idea what I’d intended to write.

Sometimes it’s like that. Sometimes I have a brilliant idea, I’ll write it down, and then make time to write.

Sometimes the words flow beautifully.

More often than not it’s a challenge to put one word in front of the other and hope that it makes sense.

Another honest confession. I’m writing this late on Monday night after having spent literally the last thirteen hours removing everything from the home office and slowly starting to put it back.

By the way, that was after I went to the gym and spent some time writing in a coffee shop this morning.

I digress.

I wrote earlier this month that I was giving up on the concept of writing 1,000 words a day, regardless of what I was writing about. I was going to focus less on journaling and more on “real” writing.

Giving up that discipline was a mistake. And so, tomorrow, August 1st, I start back again.

I will attempt to write things that are worthwhile.

But as Hemingway was reported to have said:

The first draft of anything is shit.

Excuse my French. Blame my French ancestors.

But, Hemingway was right. Nobody has a perfect draft the first time out.

Margaret Mitchell spent years writing Gone With the Wind.

The point is not giving up.

Keep writing.

Keep doing what you’re doing.

That’s my plan…just 500 more words…
