Time sneaks up on you like a windshield on a bug.
American actor, John Lithgow was born on this day in 1945.
Sort of feels like that sometime, doesn’t it?
I mean it happens to all of us. As in, how can it be 2017 already?
And 2017 is almost over.
The again, there’s Monday when we’re usually asking “how can it only be Monday?”
Or questions like “how can he be in high school” vs. “will he ever grow up?”
That’s just an example, based on no personal observances by the way.
I digress.
Time is a precious commodity. It’s true, as they say…whoever “they” are, that time is our only non-renewable commodity.
Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Unless you really are the brightest witch for your age (points for the reference).
But most of us don’t have a time turner. Okay, none of us have a time turner. And that’s probably a good thing.
So, as I mentioned earlier this week about my not attending a supervisor-recommended conference…don’t waste my time.
I have very little time to waste.
True, sometimes just doing “nothing” is a productive use of time because we all need time to recharge.
It’s tricky being both an introvert and someone who is very jealous of his time. In fact, it’s just short of a miracle that I ever leave the house.
Ever.
No, that’s not quite true. There are things I love and want to do. There are things I know I have to do.
It’s just that…well, you get the idea.
I know that I have to go to work. Some days I almost look forward to it.
Almost.
I know that I have to go to the gym. And, it’s a bit scary, but these days I’m more likely to be looking forward to time on the bike than the time in the pool.
On a side note, I think that’s because, in spite of the fact that the scales are temporarily stalled, I’ve made some significant health progress in the last three months. But that also means that, before I hit the windshield I’m going to need to upgrade my time at the gym and get going with that strength training.
I also know that it’s important to spend time in my place of worship, to spend time with friends, to spend time with family.
And, even though I may not want to see a certain performance or even enjoy another certain performance, it’s important to see those shows in which my friends are either acting in or are involved in the production aspect. Let me just say that I see enough shows that I’m comfortable with that statement without the fear of offending.
If you’re reading this, it wasn’t your show.
So, all of those things take time and none of them are a waste of time.
But the list makes it easier to understand why one might ask “where did the time go?”
Fortunately, unlike the bug in our story, most of us can ask that question. We might even be able to answer that question and do something about it.
I’m all about not letting time get away from me…or not letting the windshield sneak up on me.
Of course, since we know I don’t run, I’ll just be making my way over here on the sidewalk.
Where, of course, I won’t be stepping on any cracks because…well, that’s another post.
AND, FINALLY…
American singer Jeannie C. Riley was born on this day in 1945.
