In between goals is a thing called life, that has to be lived and enjoyed.
American comic actor and writer, Sid Caesar, was born on this day in 1922 (died 2014)
You know the drill. Don’t miss the forest looking for the tree.
It seems we’re all geared to move from one goal to the next. Darn it, I want it to stop.
We’re always looking for the next big thing, the next vacation, the next pay raise, the next holiday…the list goes on.
But, it shouldn’t.
I mean, anticipation is a great thing, but not at the expense of living in the moment.
This a hard lesson to learn.
I’ve spent a good portion of my life saying it will be great when I get to this, or that.
Sometimes it is. It’s fun to look forward to things.
You know I’m looking forward to my retirement from the day job, but that’s a moving target.
I’ve got at least a good three years before that gets here.
I can do and enjoy a lot in three years.
So, while I’m anticipating that retirement date, or the next time I can park my ample behind on a sandy beach, or maybe just the next evening cup, I’m going to work at living in the moment.
It’s like when you’re rehearsing for a show. Sure, you want to put all of the pieces together for the final product. But the rehearsal process, while it can at times be grueling, is also part of the fun, part of the experience, part of the enjoyment. As you work to piece a show together, to refine your character, to commit your blocking to memory, it’s important to enjoy the process.
It’s the same with writing. Okay, I love the actual writing. I admit that I’m not as fond of the editing process, no one really is.
But if I didn’t enjoy the whole process, I’d just follow one of those experts that tells you how to write a bestseller in forty-nine seconds…for the low, today only, cost of $499.
If I wrote simply to have an end product, I wouldn’t enjoy it nearly as much.
Do you get where I’m going here? Or where I’m trying to go?
In high school, I had a poster that said “Live is a journey, not a destination.”
Sappy, but true.
Goals and plans are great.
But the getting there can be as well.
This weekend I’m preparing for the first public reading of my script on Monday evening. That’s a goal I’ve been looking forward to, to have it read and critiqued. But it’s also part of the journey toward having the play produced for real.
So, Monday night I’ll live through that.
Let’s hope it’s enjoyable.
