And Also With You

“God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but He has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination.”

Augustine of Hippo

Today is traditionally known as “Star Wars Day.”

As in “May the Fourth Be With You.”

And also with you.

Now that we have that out of the way here you can expect to encounter it all over social media today.

You should also be prepared for Friday for “Revenge of the Fifth.”

But to go back to another time far, far away, Augustine reminds us that we’re not promised tomorrow.

None of us are.

That’s not doomsday talk. That’s reality.

Every morning that we wake up, even if we’re hitting the snooze alarm, is a new day, a new blessing, full of new mercies. Look up the reference. It will do you good.

But there’s a lot to be said of making the most of today since that’s the only day we know we have for sure.

Don’t take this to the wrong conclusion. It’s ludicrous to think that we have to do everything we have to do for the rest of our lives before midnight tonight. That’s not what this is about.

What it’s about is not wasting today.

It’s about embracing every moment.

Sure we have plans, and goals, and strategies. We should just work on them today.

What that means for each of us will be different.

I’m working with a new journal as well as my Moleskine notebook. It’s a work in progress. But, for me, I’ve started asking the question “What are you going to write today?”

It’s a daily thing. Every morning I ask the same question.

Your question will likely be different.

It’s not like Pinky and the Brain, unless you really are planning to take over the world.

But figure out what the right question is for you.

What are going to do today?

And tomorrow. If it gets here.

American singer-songwriter, guitarist and actor, Randy Travis, was born on this day in 1959.
