I stay out of politics because if I begin thinking too much about politics, I’ll probably… drop writing children’s books and become a political cartoonist again.
– Dr. Seuss
This is not a post about immigration.
I’ve seen some political cartoons from Dr. Seuss surfacing recently. It’s amazing how relevant they are today.
I for one, am glad that he stayed with children’s books. I can’t imaging growing up without the Cat in the Hat.
I like the example set by Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss. (I hope you already knew that).
Long time readers will know that I spent multiple years in politics, and remain in government. More recent readers will know that I have struggled with staying out of the frey.
Dr. Seuss is a great example of someone who did amazing things and made incredible contributions to society outside the realm of politics.
It’s an example I think I’d like to follow.
I have no illusions about thinking that grade school children will one day celebrate my birthday in their classroom. But maybe, just maybe, someone will be inspired by something I’ve written.
We’ve all, well many of us anyway, been consumed by politics lately. Certainly we all have an opinion regarding
the 2016 elections. Even no opinion is an opinion.
And while I will always assert that it’s important to stay involved, important to stay informed, important to be a part of the process, there’s a lot to be said in recognizing that the government isn’t the solution to our problems. The government doesn’t control our lives, our dreams…well…maybe our fortunes.
Which is why we should all be involved, but not consumed.
There’s a lot to be said for creating art, and music, and theatre, and literature that has nothing to do with politics or government.
Hollywood, I’m looking at you.
Sorry. Old habits die hard.
But Dr. Seuss was exactly right.
Stepping back into politics, which for me means political commentary, is like telling an alcoholic he can have just one drink, or someone addicted to sugar that one bowl of ice cream won’t hurt…pick your addiction, the concept applies.
It’s challenging. Like I wrote about yesterday, when I take politics and current events out of the inspiration for daily blog posts, I have to work harder to bring you the brilliance you’ve come to expect on a daily basis.
You’re welcome.
I’m not promising to never comment on politics or the news of the day, it’s just not going to be the focus.
For now, the focus this weekend is a road trip to Atlanta to haul furniture and stuff to the oldest offspring.
Oh, the places you’ll go…
