“Life is for living and working at. If you find anything or anybody a bore, the fault is in yourself.”
Elizabeth I of England was born on this day in 1533 (died 1603)
Life certainly isn’t boring. Not for me anyway.
Oh sure, there is work I don’t always enjoy, or times when I’d most assuredly rather be doing something else.
But rarely, if ever, do I declare myself to be “bored.” I just don’t have the time.
I’m sure in my younger days that wasn’t the story.
And, I’ll admit that, sometimes, Facebook bores me.
Just. One. More. Refresh.
The thing about work we don’t like is that, sure we can do it and consider ourselves to be bored, or we can do it and get on with it.
When Elizabeth said that (if indeed she really did), life was about working. You had to work to survive.
Okay, she just had to “work” at being Queen…but she certainly did.
But in the 1500s, if you didn’t work, you really didn’t eat, or live.
It’s easy to get bored when we don’t have to work just for the sake of survival.
This is not a treatise on the welfare system. But it’s a comment on our culture where things come too easily.
Let me tell you, when I was a kid I had to walk eight feet barefoot across shag carpenting to change to the other channel.
That’s right. I said other channel. We got two.
At least it wasn’t boring.
Truth is, even as a kid watching TV I was drawing, or coloring, or buildling with Legos.
I think that’s why I have trouble now not multi-tasking.
Sure, I know the experts tell you that you can’t efficiently mutli-task.
To that I say those of you who say it can’t be done should get out of the way of those of us doing it.
We’re bored with your negativity.
Also born on this day in 1936, American singer-songwriter and guitarist, Buddy Holly (died 1959).
