If life gives you lemons, make some kind of fruity juice. Conan O’Brien
American actor, producer, screenwriter, and talk show host, Conan O’Brien, was born on this day in 1963.
What about when life gives you Mondays?
It finally happened. For the first time in what is now…16 months I’m not carrying a script or a score with me to learn lines or music.
After all this time, it’s something of a new phenomenon. Not only do I not have rehearsal tonight, I do not have rehearsal.
Period.
Not to worry, I started a writing class last Wednesday. I was picked to participate in The Mighty Pen Project at the Virginia War Memorial. Designed primarily for veterans the class was opened up to civilians like myself and I managed to apply and be accepted. Already after the first week I can see that this class is going to be challenging, amazing, and a little intimidating. I look forward to learning much in the class that will help me with my current script project about which you read a couple of weeks ago.
Or, you should have.
As for my schedule, it’s much like buying a larger house, or getting a bigger desk. You accumulate stuff to fill up the available space.
It’s the same with the calendar. Sure, I’ve cleared a lot of things off the books. I have weeknights “free” now.
Well, not so much. I just have other things to fill them.
The last year and a half, and actually longer has been about theater. And, that hasn’t gone away. But the concentration over the next few months will be about writing, and decrapifying the house.
There’s a part of me that thinks if I could just get beyond the 40-hour per week “survival” job, that I could be as accomplished and efficient as I want to be as a writer, and as an actor. I mean, I’d have all that free time, right?
Probably not. There would just other things demanding my attention.
It’s always about priorities.
I haven’t been too busy to keep up with the writing.
Too distracted, maybe. Over-committed, most definitely.
I’m working on that.
I could have started yesterday, instead I volunteered to help with Firehouse Theatre’s Battle of the Corporate Bands. It was a fun event. It was a long day. A very long day.
I’m too old to be a roadie, or a groupie, or whatever.
In other news, because we had to pay (again) this year, I stubbornly refused to mail my tax return before today.
As I’ve said before, any political discussion with me has to start with “the government takes too much, the government spends too much.” If we can’t agree on that then there’s no point in having a discussion. Sure, we can disagree on how that money is spent.
Regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum, I think we should all also be able to agree that we can’t trust the government to spend responsibly.
I could say more, but I’ve promised myself not to talk about politics, and it’s way too late tonight to keep my words in check.
I’d just like to keep my check.
