There’s no business like show business, but there are several businesses like accounting.
– American comedian, actor, and talk show host, David Letterman, was born on this day in 1947
It’s Tuesday, and I’ve been working on this post for over a week. But, I’ve set that work aside.
Thanks to last week’s two overnight freezes the hornet’s nest is not quite ready to be stirred.
I was going to take some time to talk about all of the new religious freedom or bigot laws (depending on which side you’re on) that have been in the news lately.
But, I decided not to. I have a lot to say about them, but I’m not ready to say it.
All I’ll say is this. (Seriously, you knew I couldn’t completely let it go, didn’t you?)
Jesus never intended for government to make people better people or mandate morality or a sinless life, any more than he ever expected the government to take care of the poor.
If I’ve not equally offended everyone with that statement, then I’m not doing my job.
All I’m saying is that perhaps we all, left and right, need to spend a little less time trying to speak for Jesus and a lot more time reading the words he actually spoke. Sometimes, far too often, we forget how radical those words really were.
Read them. It will do you good.
This is a week of transitioning for me. You read yesterday, or should have, about my final stage performances for the season (at least until September). What you haven’t ready about is my part-time weekend employment for the summer. Details on that when it actually happens. Don’t get me wrong, it’s happening…just not yet.
But I’m taking my now “free” weekday evenings to regroup on the writing front, find the home office, and, with any luck, continue the recovery of the yard.
The benefit for you, dear reader, is that my lack of needing to concentrate on the learning of lines makes room for more of the brilliant writing you so longingly desire.
And if luck truly abounds, I’ll be exercising more and eating more healthily. Darn it.
Truth is, I really don’t believe in luck. We all have the same 24-hour day. What we do with it and what we accomplish shows our real priorities.
I’ve said it before. None of us is really too busy. What we are is over-committed.
We need to embrace the concept of the “no.”
I did that with the original intent of this post. As in “No, I’m not going to step into that quagmire.”
And, as scary as it is for an actor to turn down a part, considering that you never know for sure when the next offer will come, I’ve turned down some recent acting offers. Yes, more than one. Less than seventy-three.
We all make the choices about what we talk about, what we commit to, what we add to our schedule.
Thanks for making the choice to read this post today.
