Where’s the Outrage?

I mean, really, do I have to stir something up again? Literally?

Those of you who are regular readers will know that I don’t (yet) have a huge blog following. In spite of the fact that I’ve been doing this for years, I’ve had a difficult time gaining and keeping a regular readership. Partly because I tend to write on so many different topics and go off on so many tangents.

But occasionally I’ll hit a post that knocks it out of the park, so to speak, and I’ll have a huge readership.

For one day.

Take the recent Starbucks cup controversy.

The day I posted about that I had my biggest readership ever.

Ever.

Never mind when I wrote about the South Carolina shooting and the Confederate Flag, or San Bernardino, or same-sex marriage, or whatever.

What got me the most readerships I’ve had since the days of Themestream (some of you remember) was posting about the design, or lack thereof, on disposable coffee cups.

Disposable. Coffee. Cups.

Pardon me whilst I go bang my head against a wall.

Am I generally that boring?

Maybe it is me. Maybe I just can’t find that niche market that draws millions of readers and millions of dollars to my blog posts.

I read the experts who tell me they blogged their way to wealth and I just have to wonder how they did it. I haven’t figured it out.

But the thing is I don’t want to be known for posts about Starbucks cups. I’d rather that this blog be an enjoyable read that people come to in order to hear my perspective on things.

A perspective, of course, which is the right one.

You may disagree…on your own blog.

I don’t know. Maybe life is too random, or I’m too ADD to find that one focus that will draw the readers in and keep them here.

As an actor, I suppose I could pretend to be a Mommy Blogger, but I’m not into talking about poop and boogers.

That’s why I got out of politics.

Then again, I had more readers when I was writing about politics.

As a writer, I can’t be all things to all people. (Look up the reference, it will do you good.)

I have to find my audience. I have to write for the people willing to read my posts, my articles, my books.

But, I can’t build that audience based on the latest faux outrage.

Fifteen years after my first blog post, I’m still figuring this out. Granted, I didn’t resolve to morph this into a career until a couple of years ago. It’s taking time.

This past summer, I started a writing project. I committed to write 500 words a day, which has increased to 1000 words a day on the subject of how I wrote myself into full-time career as a writer. I plan to turn it into book form. The actual title is much more colorful than that, but I won’t spoil the surprise.

Just trust me when I say it’s outrageous.
