Oh yeah, decisions

Conventional wisdom that you shouldn’t make decisions when you’re stressed or tired. Or you shouldn’t do the grocery shopping when you’re hungry. Especially when Halloween candy is on sale.

I know you’re asking when are the times that you’re not stressed or tired. That’s the way life is, isn’t it?

But, as I’ve discussed here on multiple occasions, we can do something about that.

No is an okay word.

I won’t rattle off the list again, but suffice it to say that I’ve begun saying no. I’ve begun the process of saying “I’m sorry, I can no longer do that.”

Depending on which Google result you click on, either Lucille Ball or Benjamin Franklin said:

“If you want something done, ask a busy person.”

Sorry. Don’t ask me. Not right now anyway.

I’m taking a slower approach. I’m marking things off of my list and I’m going to be very, very cautious about putting anything back on the list.

I’m also taking a more deliberate approach to caring for my health. I’m not ashamed to admit that nutrition has not been a top priority. And, truth is that when something has to come off the to do list, it’s often the exercise.

Granted, I’m still dealing with both the pinched nerve and now with some lower back issues.

Although I think the irony is that the back trouble came because I was carrying around my messenger bag with my Moleskin notebook, my novel draft and material for six shows of which I was either performing, producing or promoting.

True story. I switched to a backpack last week to balance out the weight distribution. It’s making a difference.

Sorry if I seem to be rambling about my issues. But if you’ll note, this is my blog.

I don’t mean that in a snarky way. I’m sure you have a list of things you need to deal with whether it’s health, or family, or job, or whatever.

But this is a journey here. It’s how, at the age of senior discounts, I’ve finally decided what I want to be when I grow up. This blog is the journey of how I’m going to get there.

The point is, for me, that I’m dealing with multiple things. One at a time.

If I have any regrets, it’s that I didn’t take this approach thirty years ago.

If only I could have caught a ride back with Marty McFly to 1985 to kick my twenty-something self in the behind.

But that’s not happening. So the only real regrets are, now that I’ve realized what needs to be done, not doing it.

Darn it.

My reality is that I’m in a bit of a maintenance pattern while the show is running. I’ll get the rest and extra sleep while I can. And I’ll make the healthiest food choices that I can, considering the schedule.

Between now and Monday when you return…

Wait…you ARE returning aren’t you?

Between now and then I will have completed the run of Sweeney Todd. I will likely have removed some leaves from the yard. I may have painted the porch. I will have gone to church. And maybe had an ale or two with friends.

With any luck I’ll have won the lottery or at least have finished next week’s posts.

Tomorrow is Halloween. I don’t normally post on Saturday, so I shan’t this time.

But somewhere along the way I hope I can watch The Great Pumpkin and perhaps reminisce a bit about childhood Halloweens. They were a big deal in my small town.

And my costumes were adorable.

If you don’t believe me, ask my Mother.
