If I’m honest I have to tell you I still read fairy-tales and I like them best of all.
Belgian-English actress and singer Audrey Hepburn was born on this day in 1929. (died 1993)
Star Wars may be the greatest fairy tale of our generation And I say that as a bonafied Tolkien geek who sat in the theater for the first marathon of the Lord of the Rings movies.
I don’t know why I’ve always been such a fan of the fairy tales, or of science fiction.
In elementary school I read all of the Oz books available in the library. Thanks to amazing English teachers I found Tolkien in high school and C.S. Lewis in college.
C.S. Lewis said:
When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.
– On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature
Well said.
I think we can all admit that being grown up isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
But, even in Never Land there are pirates and crocodiles. In Middle Earth there are Orcs and Nazgûl.
In the great stories of our time, we know that the good always wins.
In the greatest story of all time, we know that as well.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.
– Revelation 21:4
When we look at the pain around us, it’s hard to believe that there will be a happy ending. It’s hard to believe that what’s right will win.
We look at Baltimore, at Nepal, at the Middle East.
In my home church we are grieving the loss of a young wife and mother, taken far too soon. Because cancer sux.
But the loss, and the pain, are no longer hers. They are ours. We believe her suffering is over.
That, my friends, is no fairy tale.
May the 4th be with you.
