The Perfect Gift

The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel (which means “God with us”). – Matthew 1:23

It’s a very rainy Christmas Eve morning and I have to admit that the weather does nothing to help the fact that I’m already in a rather Bah! Humbuggy mood.

If you’ve been reading my posts, you know why. And if you haven’t been reading my posts on a regular basis, it’s time you started.

Still, while I’m stressing over finding (and paying for) the perfect gift, I am reminded that, indeed, there was only one perfect gift. The one perfect gift knows and understands everything that I’ve been going through, everything that I’m feeling.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. – Hebrews 4:15

John Calvin put it this way “Christ has put on our feelings along with our flesh.”

So I am reminded that none of what I’ve been dealing with over the past few months, or what I’m dealing with now, or what I’ll deal with next year…none of that is a surprise to him.

The Perfect Gift, God with us, knows and understands.

The Perfect Gift won’t be found under the Christmas tree.

And it’s all I really need for Christmas.

Thou didst leave Thy throne and Thy kingly crown,

When Thou camest to earth for me;

But in Bethlehem’s home was there found no room For Thy holy nativity.

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,

There is room in my heart for Thee.

– Emily E. Elliott, 1864
