Back to school week hit with a vengeance. By Thursday when I couldn’t face the 5:00 a.m. alarm, I was asking myself what I thought I was doing. I can’t get home at almost 11:00 p.m. from rehearsal and expect to be in bed in time enough for a 5:00 a.m. alarm. This weekend will be spent in dance, vocal and drama auditions. Not to mention rehearsal and writing for next week.
All that to say I’m making adjustments in the schedule. My Google calendar currently shows that I will be available to mow the yard and rake leaves on December 27. I hope the neighbors don’t mind.
In news you should not have missed…
NATO Summit
NATO leaders gathered in Wales and had a lot to talk about from Russia and the Ukraine to the Middle East. And the President got to visit Stonehenge. He also had this to say:
“I think it is absolutely critical that we have Arab states and specifically Sunni-majority states that are rejecting the kind of extremist nihilism that we’re seeing out of ISIL, that say that is not what Islam is about and are prepared to join us actively in the fight.” — President Barack Obama after the U.S. and key allies agreed that the Islamic State group is a significant threat to NATO countries that they will counter by economic and military means. Art respects life
Following the second beheading of an American journalist, BBC removes a beheading scene from the latest episode of Doctor Who. This time The Doctor and Clara travel to medieval England and encounter Robin Hood. BBC said in a statement, “In light of recent news events, we have made an edit to episode three out of respect.” [Vulture/NYMag.com]
Closer to home…
The RTD asks What comes next for the McDonnells? We’d all like the story to be over. No one more than Bob and Maureen McDonnell.
Thirteen years later, did it really change us for ever?
As we approach the 13th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, President Obama has has proclaimed Friday, September 5 through Sunday, September 7, 2014, as National Days of Prayer and Remembrance.
In his proclamation, the President said:
Each year as our Nation mourns, our faith restores us and summons within us the sense of common purpose we rediscovered after the attacks. Prayer and humble reflection carry us forward on the path we travel together, helping mend deep wounds still sore from loss. These lasting virtues sustain us not just for one day, but every day.
We still miss you, Joan
There will continue to be multiple tributes to Joan Rivers. She was 81, but we still lost her too soon. Jimmy Kimmel gave this touching tribute.
We’re all screwed up. And the way Christians mess things up is we act like we’ve got it going on. And if we would just stay in that place of, ‘Hey, we’re all screwed up and but for the grace of God, none of us have a shot here.’ We need to have a sense of humor about it; that’s kind of the way I’ve always faced my comedy.
