América el hermoso

I wasn’t really watching the Super Bowl. I need to go back and look at all of the ads, which if your team isn’t in the game (and as a Redskins’ fan it’s been a couple of decades) is what watching is mostly about. That and the national anthem (very well done) and the halftime show (pretty darn good).

But I had the game on in the background while I was working on other stuff. I heard the Coke commercial with America the Beautiful being sung in different languages.

I bolted to Facebook and posted this:

Countdown until the interwebz start complaining about America the Beautiful in other languages in 3…2…1…

I was being a smart-ass. But I also knew I was on to something.

I saw the first complaint thirteen minutes later. The commercial is still being discussed around the web. Some loved it. Some hated it.

Look, I think it’s right for English to be considered the official U.S. language. But the beauty of this country is in different languages and different cultures coming together.

I loved the ad.

And maybe those complaining should just read the words in English. And get over it.

America, The Beautiful Lyrics
by Katharine Lee Bates – 1913

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern impassion’d stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev’ry gain divine!

O Beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
