– Will Rogers
So, you know you’re a writer.
Now what?
You certainly can’t just sit back and wait for the contracts and book deals to come rolling in.
Here’s a list of things a writer (or aspiring writer) can do.
1. Write.
2. Read.
3. Write some more.
4. Read some more.
5. Keep writing.
6. Keep reading.
Seriously.
It seems simple, but the way to become a better writer is to…write. And when you’re not writing, read other writers. Lots of them.
Read writers who inspire you. Read writers who write the books you wish you had written. But also read some who aren’t so inspiring.
Face it; it’s possible to learn, even from a bad writer.
I’ll pause while you think twice about posting a snarky comment about my writing.
Sure, there are other things you have to do to promote your writing. That’s a different post. This post is about the fact that there’s always room for improvement.
You may already be a great writer. Probably not.
I’m not. But I am a good writer.
Most of us who see this as a career are good writers. Many who sell the most books are good writers who happen to also be lucky writers and were at the right place at the right time.
We can all be learning and becoming better writers.
We can’t get just one good review and stop improving our game.
See the list. Find the time to write. Find the time to read.
Don’t just sit there.
