Actress Cloris Leachman was born on this day in 1926. She has been acting since 1942.

Leachman holds the record for the most Primetime Emmy Awards, of which she won eight, more than any other performer. She also won one Daytime Emmy Award. In 1971 she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in The Last Picture Show.

She is most remembered as Mary Richards’ (Mary Tyler Moore) landlady, Phyllis Lindstrom. A spinoff, Phyllis, ran for two seasons.

Leachman also appeared in three Mel Brooks films, including Young Frankenstein. Her portrayal of Frau Blücher won her the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

She was the oldest person to date to compete on Dancing with the Stars.
