Tributes to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher are pouring in.
In a time when the world needed them Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II were there. While the first few weeks of Pope Francis give us hope, those who can follow in the footsteps of Reagan and Thatcher don’t exist. Or if they do, we don’t know them yet.
We all have ways of remember where we were when siginifcant events happen. I remember when I learned that JFK had been shot, that Reagan had been shot, that the Challenger shuttle had exploded, that George Bush had finally won the 2000 election.
Likewise, I remember when the news was announced that Margaret Thatcher had become the British Prime
Minister. I was in rehearsal for a college production of Blood Wedding, a Spanish tragedy by Federico Garcia Lorca. The news came to the cast room as we were getting ready. A shout went up from the females in the cast which prompted a “what on earth are you thinking?” response from our director. We had an audience waiting.I don’t think I can add anything else to the tributes to this brave, strong, effective leader.
