People we love, Werner Klemperer

Happy Birthday, Colonel Klink.

German-born American Actor, Werner Klemperer, best known for his portrayal of Colonel Klink on television’s Hogan’s Heroes, was born on this day in 1920. He won the Emmy award for best actor in a supporting role in 1968 and 1969.

Klemperer had many other television and film roles in his long career. In 1987, he won the Tony Award for the portrayal of Herr Schultz in the Broadway revival of Cabaret. I saw him perform that role along with Joel Grey at the Kennedy Center later that year.

Klemperer died from cancer at his home in New York on December 6, 2000.
