Virginia Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli has announced “Baskets Before Brackets” to combat hunger as people focus on March Madness and Basketball. Cuccinelli’s statement reads:
When I coached basketball we taught kids the fundamentals of the game, but we also taught them that there’s more than just winning and losing. Over the next few weeks lots of folks will be talking about college kids shooting baskets, but I want to ask you to help me fill baskets… grocery baskets.
There are far too many people in Virginia hurting right now and too many kids go hungry each day because their parents can’t afford groceries in this tough economy.
So instead of hoping for a half court bank shot going into the basket at the buzzer to win your bracket, I want to ask you to donate your own basket by giving to your local food bank. Please fill out the pledge form and help feed kids all across Virginia.
As a token of my personal appreciation, one person who pledges to help feed Virginia’s kids will be randomly selected to win two (2) tickets to the NCAA Men’s Basketball East Regional Final being held in DC later this month.
There are some things more important than a basketball game. I hope you’ll join me in donating to your local food bank, because in Virginia, no child or family should ever go hungry.
Thanks for your support!
