Born on this day in 1913.

Vivien Leigh was born Viven Mary Hartley in British India in 1913. She is most remembered for her role as Scarlett O’Hara in the epic Gone with the Wind. She received the Academy Award for best actress. She later won best actress for her portrayal of Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire, a role she played on the London stage.

Leigh struggled most of her life with bipolar disorder. A problem that plagued both her career and marriages.

In May of 1967, Leigh suffered a recurrence of tuberculosis. She seemed to recover, but was found dead at home on July 8, 1967. She was 53.
