People We Love: Frank Sutton

Frank Spencer Sutton, October 23, 1923 – June 28, 1974

Born on this Day in 1923.

Fans of Gomer Pyle can still hear Gunnery Sergeant Vince Carter (Frank Sutton) yelling “I can’t HEAR you!”

Sutton served in the U.S. Army in World War II. When he came home he began acting on stage and later played small roles in numerous television shows such as The Fugitive, Gunsmoke and The Twilight Zone.

He first portrayed Sergeant Carter on a 1964 episode of The Andy Griffith Show which led to the spin-off series Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. After Gomer Pyle, Sutotn appeared regularly with Jim Nabors on The Jim Nabors Hour variety show with fellow Gomer Pyle cator Ronnie Schell.

Frank Sutton died of a heart attack on June 28, 1974. He was 50.
