On this day in Jamestown: July 30, 1619

On this day in 1619 in the colony at Jamestown, Virginia, the House of Burgesses convened for the first time. The House was established by the Virginia Company.

The Assembly became the Virginia House of Delegates in 1776. Today the Virginia General Assembly is the oldest continuous law-making body in the New World.
