Facebook has been great for me. I’ve reconnected with many people I haven’t seen in years, made many new friends, and have found yet another method of procrastination. The downside — or maybe it’s an upside — is that it’s revealed some very troubling things about the social media platform, and personal relationships.

I dunno… I’ve found myself defriending acquaintances that I’ve found to be more about hijacking conversation or exercising the “heckler’s veto” than anything else.
Rarely have I found the person who simply defriends because of ones opinions. Though it does bring up an interesting point — when folks are forced to defend their ideas in the public square, few people are able to do so.
The advantages of Facebook versus the good ol’ days of the blogosphere? You have to stick your name next to the comment. No dodging, no squirming, no pseudonyms.
Not only does it increase the quality of the conversation, but ignorance has a name… even when it’s my own from time to time. 🙂
