History in the Making

What a novel concept.  U.S. Lawmakers actually reading the Constitution of the United States.

Tomorrow, January 6, for the first time in the history of this nation, the United States Constitution will be read on the floor of the House of Representatives.  Only twice before has the text been inserted into the Congressional Record, but never have these words been read in full in Congress. [H/T Rick Sincere, The Charlottesville Examiner]

The reading is part of the new rules adopted by the Republican majority and will from now on begin each session of Congress.  In addition, new rules adopted by the Republicans require that every bill must contain a section citing the constitutional provision that gives authority for whatever the bill does.

Accepting the gavel as he assumed the office of Speaker Today, Ohio Representative John Boehner said:

“The American people have humbled us. They have refreshed our memories as to just how temporary the privilege to serve is. They have reminded us that everything here is on loan from them. That includes this gavel, which I accept cheerfully and gratefully, knowing I am but its caretaker. After all, this is the people’s House. This is their Congress. It’s about them, not us. What they want is a government that is honest, accountable and responsive to their needs. A government that respects individual liberty, honors our heritage, and bows before the public it serves.”  Full text at The New York Times.

Maybe, just maybe, they’re listening now.

I wasted some time following this hashtag last night.

#LessAmbitiousMovies, the craziest Twitter hashtag meme I’ve ever seen, pacing at around 200 tweets per minute. The basic premise is to tweet out the titles of popular films but watered down and less ambitious, get it?

H/T TechCrunch

It’s still trending this morning, and it seems to have outpaced the also rans of #cannibalmovies and #neocon movies.

Have you played along with these trending topics? Have you created one of your own that made it to the top?
