Georgia on our minds…
Over at Bearing Drift, Chris gives an excellent explanation of Why Georgia Matters.
This conflict should not be ignored by the American people. If Georgia falls to Soviet aggression, it will have far-reaching impacts upon the global community over the next four years. John McCain has responded forcefully and intelligently, Barack Obama has not. That should tell the American people all they need to know about these candidates’ readiness to be President.
The right-wing liberal tells us What America can do for Georgia.
We can, and we must, make sure any Russian conquest of Georgia be temporary and pyrrhic. If we do that, we will strike a blow for freedom for the world to see.
Also worth noting from D.J.: Lowell’s confused.
Of course The One continued to show his grasp of foreign policy by calling for the United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution condemning Russia’s invation of Georgia.
Well now, that sounds like a great idea, but under Article 27 of the United Nations Charter, Security Council decisions on all substantive matters require the affirmative votes of nine members. A negative vote, or veto, by a permanent member prevents adoption of a proposal, even if it has received the required number of affirmative votes. The five permanent members are:
- The French Republic
- The People’s Republic of China
- The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
- The United States of America
- The Russian Federation
Gee, wonder how those Russians would vote?
