The Wrong Reverend Wright just doesn’t know when to quit

It’s the gift that keeps on giving.  Barack Obama however, is hastily looking for the receipt to make an exchange.

In a speech this morning at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, Wright basically accused the  U.S. Government of terrorism and Barack Obama of lying about his relationship with Wright.

See what others are saying.

Election ‘08: Barack Obama’s interview on “Fox News Sunday” showed a liberal uncomfortable with the truth. He is often compared to JFK, a leader who made tough choices. But Obama turns out to be a profile in porridge.

Then cometh the good reverend to step all over the out-of-context defense in a speech at the National Press Club. He defended his “chickens come home to roost” statement about 9/11 in exactly the same terms as in his original sermon: “You cannot do terrorism on other people and expect it never to come back on you.” He stood by his damnation of America and his contention that the U.S. government had created AIDS: “I believe our government is capable of doing anything.”

Questions about pastor fair game, Obama says

WASHINGTON — Sen. Barack Obama may have been hoping to move to the sunnier side of the campaign trail by declining to debate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton this week, but he discovered Sunday that won’t necessarily do the trick.

Got that? Challenging “God d*** America” = attacking the black church.

Rev. Wright’s Press Club Debacle Has CNN Anchor Groaning ‘Ah, Boy’

How bad was Reverend Wright’s appearance before the National Press Club this morning? Bad enough that even CNN contributor Roland Martin—who yesterday enthused about Wright’s address to the Detroit NAACP, who gave Wright’s chat with Bill Moyers an ‘A’—flunked it with an ‘F.’ Bad enough that David Gergen condemned it as “narcissistic almost beyond belief.” Bad enough that, introducing a panel discussion of the speech, the palpably distressed CNN Newsroom host Tony Harris let out an audible groan of “ah, boy,” and later wondered how much damage had been done.

In view of Wright’s elucidations, I find it difficult to understand how the candidacy of Barack Obama cannot be mortally wounded by his longtime, voluntary and intimate association with this man. How can Obama possibly preach national harmony, reconciliation and bipartisanship coming from this type of church culture — which Wright appears to say harbors an unforgiving spirit? Where else, if not from his church, are we to assume Obama gets his ideas on reconciliation?

  • Matthew says:

Rev. Wright is a man of God.

  • Michael says:

Scripture is full of stories of men of God who failed horribly.

  • Matthew says:

Michael, in fact, one of the few thematic elements present throughout every book of scripture is the failure of *all* of humankind to live up to God’s hopes/expectations. Your precious Republican party leaders included.

Rev. Wright has done an incredible amount to build God’s kingdom in Chicago. His actions, more than any words ever could, prove the fruits of His spirit. Look beyond the youtube clips and Republican and Clintonian (united for a change) spin machines. See him as a brother in Christ.

  • Michael says:

I’m more than well aware of the failures of Republicans Matthew. Trust me, when you’re close enough, the warts show up a lot better. And if you read my writing long enough you’ll see that I don’t give them a pass, nor do I refer to them as “precious.”

But we don’t get into heaven by just our deeds. Reverend Wright’s words must be measured as well as his deeds. And he’s spewed some mighty hateful words. Be that as it may, the issue really isn’t Reverent Wright as it is Barack Obama trying to have it both ways. More than anyone now, Obama sees Wright as a liability, and he threw his (used-ta-be) spiritual mentor under the bus.

    Luke 17:3
So watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.
