WASHINGTON (AP) — Conservative activist Paul Weyrich, who coined the phrase “moral majority” and helped turn social conservatives into a powerful force in the Republican Party, died Thursday. He was 66.

Paul’s real genius was organization: He could see a better way to do politics, keeping faith with his ideals, but also with the practical realities of getting things done. Back in the 70s, Paul was present at the creation of the Committee for the Survival of a Free Congress, which was one of the first ideologically minded political action committees. And he was also a driving force in the creation of the National Conservative Political Action Committee, and the Moral Majority, followed by, in the 80s, the Christian Coalition. All of these groups were controversial in their time, and some eventually went out of existence, but in each case, Paul’s emphasis was on creating nimble organizations that were faithful to conservative thinking.

The conservative movement lost a leader today. Paul Weyrich, co-founder of the Heritage Foundation and Free Congress Foundation and philosophical father of numerous other organizations, spent his life confounding the Left. He built coalitions and pushed conservative principles when the idea of doing so in Washington was novel, and the possibility of success near nil.

Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Director and Senior Fellow of Concerned Women for America’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, stated, “Paul Weyrich’s death is a personal and overwhelming grief for me; I had numerous opportunities to admire and respect this conservative leader in so many different policy and personal arenas. His ability to unite the diverse members of the conservative coalition was remarkable. It is impossible to envision the future of the conservative movement without Paul Weyrich’s wisdom and insights. He was the glue that kept the conservative movement on the right path. His Christian commitment was unshakable and his life will continue to inspire and challenge future generations of conservatives.” The Dallas Morning News

In Memory of Paul Weyrich

Paul was the only man in this town who knew how to revive the Right and he did so through political thought and political organization. This is a very sad day, indeed, and his passing comes at a time when we need his leadership more than ever. Conservatives would do well to allow Paul’s life and legacy to not only serve our memory, but to guide our future.
