One Bite at a Time

You can only bite off so much, so you gotta know what you want to do.

American singer-songwriter and actress, Lesley Gore, was born on this day in 1946 (died February 16, 2015)

I know, you’re supposed to eat an elephant one bite at a time.

But, who wants to eat an elephant?

Elephant ears at the State Fair are another story.

It’s true that you have to know what you want to do. You have to know where to put your focus.

That’s difficult for someone like me who had three different liberal arts majors in college and still graduated in four years.

I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I could have pulled off majoring in music AND speech communications AND English…not to mention drama and art…

It’s one thing to be a Renaissance man. It’s quite another to be pulled in multiple directions and want to do it all.

Truth is, if I had it all, I don’t know where I’d put it.

Or when I’d have time to use it.

It’s the continuing story of trying to find the right focus for this blog. I don’t have a single focus in my life. I’m interested, and involved with, many things.

Sometimes too many. But I will not allow myself to be lectured on my own blog.

Mainly because I do enough of that myself.

I’m trying to focus on the writing and the health. I’ve got the writing thing in decent, but not great shape.

The health is a bit of a challenge now that I have a seven-day work week. I know, I know. I’m recalculating all of that.

But it’s hard not to get distracted by the reading and the music and the theater and more.

At the park over the weekend I had two opportunities to use both my Spanish and Sign Language skills.

Except the problem is I really don’t have any Spanish or Sign Language skills any longer.

For one brief shining moment, I thought about brushing up on them…you know…in my free time…

Choices. I have to make choices.

We all do.

We can’t do everything.

Even if we do it one bite at a time.

So, I’m constantly reassessing and rethinking and rewriting.

And that’s okay. It helps keep me focused.

As a bonus, it gives me something to write about.

American singer-songwriter, guitarist and actor, Larry Gatlin, was born on this day in 1948. I saw the Gatlin Brothers perform at an event leading up to the 1994 Super Bowl in Atlanta.

I’m so very much like you. I am interested in a hundred things all at the same time and no time to fit them all in. Something always gets shuffled to the bottom and sometimes never gets done.
