Kathryn Elizabeth “Kate” Smith was born on this day in 1907 in Greenville, Virginia. She was an American singer best known for her rendition of Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America.”

Smith’s recording, radio and television career spanned five decades. She died on June 17, 1986. She was 79.
