People we love: Robert Reed

Robert Reed, October 19, 1934 – May 12, 1992

Born on this Day in 1934.

Robert Reed was one of America’s favorite television dads. As architect Mike Brady he married the woman who was bringing up three very lovely girls. The Brady Bunch ran from 1969 to 1974. There were several follow up made for TV movies and series including “The Brady Bunch Variety Hour” which thankfully only ran for 9 episodes.

Reed was a classically trained actor who was unhappy with the role of Mike Brady, believing the silliness of the show was beneath his Shakespearean training. Reed appeared in numerious other stage shows and also had a recurring role of Lt. Adam Tobias on Mannix from 1967 to 1975.

Reed chose to keep the fact that he was gay a private matter believing it would damage his career. He was married from 1954-1959 and had one daughter.

Reed tested HIV positive, but his death came from a six month battle with colon cancer and lymphoma. He died on May 19, 1992. He was 59.
