People we love: Polly Holliday

Polly Dean Holliday, Born July 2, 1937

Polly Holliday is perhaps most well known for her role in the television sit come Alice where, as waitress Florence Jean Castleberry, better known as “Flo,” she coined the popular phrase “Kiss my grits!” She later started in a spin-off show named for her character “Flo.”

Film roles include All the President’s Men, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Parent Trap (1998 remake) and Gremlins.

She has appeared on Broadway in several productions including a revival of Arsenic and Old Lace. She was nominated for a Tony award for her portrayal of Big Mama in a 1990 revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

She was inducted into the Alabama Stage and Screen Hall of Fame in 2000.
