I Love a Parade

The 1906 Rose Parade Queen Elsie Armitage and her Court

Everything’s coming up roses.

Call me silly, but for me the holiday season runs from parade to parade. It begins on Thanksgiving Day with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and it ends on New Year’s Day with the Tournament of Roses Parade. This year, since New Year’s Day fell on Sunday, the Tournament of Roses tradition of “Never on Sunday” begun in 1893 continues and the parade was moved to Monday.

Part of my fascination deals with childhood memories. On Thanksgiving I’d watch the Macy’s parade while my dad, brother and cousins were deer hunting in the mountains. And on New Year’s Day, I’d watch the Tournament of Roses Parade with my parents.

Today’s parade marks the The 123rd Rose Parade. This year’s parade is sponsored by Honda. The theme is “Just Imagine…” J.R. Martinez , retired soldier, actor and spokesman, will serve as the Grand Marshal.

One of these days, I’ll find myself in New York for the Macy’s Parade and in Pasadena for the Rose Parade.

But for now, I’m content to watch the Rose Parade without commerical interruption on HGTV.
